The formula
Weekly pay = rate × regular hours + rate × overtime hours × (1 + overtime premium) + rate × night hours × night premium. Monthly pay is the weekly amount × 52 ÷ 12, and yearly pay is weekly × 52.
For example, $15 an hour for 40 hours is $600 a week, $2,600 a month and $31,200 a year before tax.
Why monthly pay is not weekly × 4
A month is about 4.33 weeks, not 4. Multiplying by 4 undercounts your pay by around 8% a month. Using 52 weeks over 12 months gives the real average.
Overtime and night premiums
Premiums vary by country, contract and collective agreement. Time and a half is a 50% premium; double time is 100%. Night work often carries its own percentage. Enter the ones on your contract to see how much of your pay comes from them.
