Minutes to decimal hours
Payroll and timesheets often use decimal hours instead of hours and minutes: 7 hours 30 minutes becomes 7.5. Convert both ways below, and check the reference chart for every value from 1 to 60 minutes.

How to convert minutes to decimal hours
- To go from hours and minutes to decimal, type both into the first box.
- To go the other way, type your decimal hours into the second box; it accepts a comma or a dot.
- The formula is minutes ÷ 60: 30 minutes is 0.5 hours, 15 minutes is 0.25 hours.

What decimal hours are
A decimal hour expresses minutes as a fraction of 60 rather than as a minute count: 45 minutes is not written as "45", it's 0.75 hours. Almost every payroll system uses this format because it can be added and multiplied without treating minutes separately.
The most common mistake is reading 7.30 as "7 hours 30 minutes" when it's actually 7 hours 18 minutes (0.30 × 60 = 18). The chart below avoids that mix-up.

On payslips, on timesheets HR fills in, and in spreadsheets that add up shifts: decimal is preferred everywhere a formula needs to multiply hours by an hourly rate directly.
